Andrea’s Film Diary

Audrey Rose (1977)

Rosemary’s Baby (sans Satan) + being burnt alive + a dash of Kramer vs. Kramer. Would have worked better as a comedy. I liked Anthony Hopkins though.

The House of the Devil (2009)

The House of the Devil is about a small family of poorly organized Satanists with a tight deadline. There are also two unsuspecting young women/victims, one of whom has been “chosen” because no one else responded to the babysitting flyer. Should have been a comedy. Intentionally.

Spoiler: At the last scene in the cemetery, shut off the film. The destination beyond that point isn’t worth the journey.

Rawhead Rex (1986)

Never has a rabid Irish gorilla demon been so terrifyingly stupid. Physics, logic, and reality be damned! Thank God for the pagan fertility goddess and an awful mom.

Fun game: Watch for the prettiest brunette of the Traveler bunch and take a guess as to why she’s even there.

Wounds (2019)

Not to get all political, but the entertainment industry needs tougher regulations; clear boundaries and smart regulations are all that stand between a full, rewarding life and an unsatisfying existence spent watching garbage movies. Yes, I’m referring to Hulu Originals

The simplistic thumb up/down option is inadequate. Providers give viewers a heads-up about language, sexuality, cartoon violence, or smoking. A far more helpful tool for subscribers would be and indicator that a given film isn’t worth your time. Films like the one I watched on Hulu yesterday, Wounds (2019) with Armie Hammer.

Wounds is a story (?) about a bartender who may or may not be having a breakdown (in which he imagines the decapitated heads of friends), which may or not be the work of an outside, possibly alien source, one with nothing better to do than fuck with Armie apparently. Who knows. More importantly, who cares.

Of course a thumb-down conveys a viewer’s (my) lack of enthusiasm, but what about those of us who sat through the whole damn thing, only to be presented with an abstruse, this-is-some–bullshit, cockroach-obscured final scene? This level of disappointment simply can not be conveyed by a turned down thumb. What sends a stronger message than a thumbs down…?
